Jen, tell us a bit about yourself. Where were you born and where in the US do you currently live?
I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. I currently reside 30 minutes away in a town called Tooele, Utah.
How long have you been writing for us? I think you’ve been with us for a very long time now (around 2010 I think) — and how did you find out about us in the first place?
I have been with this company for 7 years! A friend of mine was doing working for this company. She told me to give it a try, before I knew it, I gave up my full time job in the city and started working from home. It was the best decision I could have made.
You sure have written a TON of content for our customers over the years. What types of articles and other content do you like writing about — do you have any favorite topics or subjects?
My favorite topics to write about are things like landscaping, relationships, home remodeling and pet topics.
Describe just a bit your writing process. How do you prepare for writing and actually execute on a customer order, step-by-step. What’s the process you follow?
I use my smartphone a lot. It’s very handy for finding work. I have a spare bedroom in my home which is used as my office. I don’t have any small kids at home, so that’s not an issue. I have my laptop that is used for writing, then I have another laptop that is used for research. I go to the website for the client and learn more about what they have to offer. I always check the “FAQ’s” or “Services” section. This offers a lot of info in one area. I use subheadings, so that makes it easy to stick with each small topic. Before I know it, I have met my word count and it’s time to wrap things up.
When you encounter it, how do you personally overcome “writer’s block”?
Honestly? I use essential oils as a way to relax. I have a bottle of Ylang-Ylang that I use on my forehead several times a day. It helps me to relax and focus. At this point, my mind just opens up. If I am still struggling, I do more research and it always comes to me. I also like to look out the window while I write, especially on days with bad weather. It’s peaceful and helps me to focus.
How would you say being able to work as one of our writers has helped you to gain experience and deepen your skills as a writer?
I like this company because they always challenge me to do better. I never dreamed that I would be earning a living as a writer. English writing wasn’t my best subject in school. I find myself constantly reading articles online, not because I am interested in the topic, but because I am interested in the format and writing style.
Many content producers today are working from their own homes — and that can be a challenge. What do you do to minimize distractions and achieve a professional environment, even while working out of your home?
It’s just my husband and I, and our little dog who lies at my feet. The house is pretty quiet. I’ve found that if my house is in order, I can focus more on my work. If I can’t focus, I throw in a load of laundry or do the dishes. I keep my office tidy, just as though I were expecting someone to drop by. That generally helps.
Do you do any other work as a freelancer — do you have your own website or personal blog where you share your writing and connect with the public?
My only other job is a school bus driver. I do that in the morning and afternoon, and then write to unwind.
